CHS Academics Overview
At CHS, our goal is to give students a solid foundation for their educational career as well as for life. We hope to encourage and strengthen a love for learning so that our youngest students will continue to excel academically throughout their years at CHS. The characteristics that best describe our academic program are Christ-centered, challenging, and comprehensive.
CHS students consistently outperform national averages at all grade levels annually on the Stanford Achievement Test. Even though our goal is to teach far more than can be measured on standardized tests, we believe that proper analysis of the tests can benefit our students.
Limiting class size to 20 students per teacher in elementary and middle school allows our students to receive more one-on-one attention. We address the learning needs of individual students and offer help to students with difficulties through our Center for Hope and Success.
Kindergarten and Pre-1st
Our Kindergarten program combines developmental expectations with academic readiness instruction. Plenty of hands-on experiences, such as field trips and creative expression through art, music and unit themes help reinforce learning. Free and structured play is an integral part of the curriculum. Parents are offered a choice between half-day and full-day programs. For children who need an extra year of development before first grade, we offer a pre-first class. Pre-first students review kindergarten skills and move ahead to beginning first grade skills.
Elementary School (Grades 1-5)
Curriculum is carefully chosen to reflect and include biblical principles, an emphasis on application to everyday life, parental involvement, a phonetic and comprehensive skill approach to reading, and a challenging academic program balanced with attention to the developmental needs of children. Subject disciplines include Art, Bible, Computer Skills, Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar), Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish.
Middle School (Grades 6-8)
The adolescent years are marked by transition, and CHS seeks to help students and their families adjust to physical and spiritual changes as well as the academic rigors. Students change classes and have multiple teachers, and everyone is challenged to maintain meaningful relationships and manageable workloads. The core curriculum consists of Bible, Health, History, Keyboarding, Language Arts, Math, Physical Education, Science, Speech and Study Skills. Electives include Art, Band, Chorus, Drama, and Middle School Newspaper. Middle Schoolers also have the opportunity to participate in academic, athletic, and art competitions as well as National Junior Honor Society.
High School (Grades 9-12)
At CHS, the high school years are recognized as “launching years” that prepare our students to do their unique part in transforming our culture and world. Our desired outcome is to see submission to the Lordship of Christ, a demonstration of Christ’s character and authentic faith, and application of God’s Word in loving service. Our academic courses not only exceed state guidelines for a college preparatory program of study, but they also cultivate proficiency in the use of knowledge and skills for loving service in the world.
The core curriculum consists of Bible, Health, History, Language Arts, Math, Physical Education, Science and Spanish. Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses (at Dalton State College) are available to students who meet the requirements. Electives include Art, Band, Chorus, Drama, Photo Journalism, Psychology, and Speech.
Leadership opportunities are offered with membership on the Student Council and National Honor Society. Local service projects help students find their unique areas of ministry. Students may participate in interscholastic, athletic and arts events through the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA), Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and the Georgia Football League. Social events are offered to promote group fellowship.
